Shamrock 5k + 10k – March 12 2016 – Asheville Catholic School – Asheville NC

Asheville Shamrock 5k and 10k 2016

This race showed up on the Asheville running scene back in 2007. It originally started and finished on Central Avenue near downtown, between Woodfin and Chestnut.  In 2010 the race moved to Asheville Catholic School in North Asheville. The start/finish at Asheville Catholic School features a nice, cozy gymnasium in which to hang out before and after the race.

The courses have stayed largely the same over all these years and the 5k will be the same as last year. However, the 10k course has been redesigned and avoids crossing Charlotte street and, for the first time in ten years, does not climb up to Sunset. Instead, it features a number of different yet challenging hills in and around the Grove Park neighborhood.

I have never missed the Shamrock 10k, having run it every year since 2007. I plan to do the 10k again this year for the 10th time. I ran the course on January 9th and I believe that the new course is a little easier than the course that we’ve used for the past six years, but not too much. Instead of a big long climb up to Sunset, this course features many stretches of up and down, the longest of which is in the first mile with a long climb up Country Club.
