A Hero’s 5k – January 30, 2016 – Furman University – Greenville SC
|This run for an important cause has had a great turnout since the inaugural event in 2011. The course consists of a winding loop around the jogging trails of the Furman University Campus.
FROM THE RACE ORGANIZERS
SPC. Geoffrey Whitsitt was killed in action on January 13, 2010. Unfortunately, many preceded him, and many have since followed him. It is very easy to look at these deaths as a raw number – part of the ‘scorecard’ of war – as the date of this writing, 5726. However, behind each of these numbers lies a real person – a person missed and mourned by family and friends, never to be forgotten.
It is because of the legacy of Geoff that A Hero’s 5K exists. A Hero’s 5k was founded in 2010 and is a 5k walk/run held annually at Furman University to remember all of the soldiers who fought, died, and lived for our great country. We exist to raise awareness of the sacrifices made each day by the United States Military, and to raise money to support the needs of South Carolina servicemen and women and their families.
