TopOfTheSouth

This road race touts the highest elevation road race finish in the Southeast. It will begin at Roan Mountain Youth Club and ends at the Rhododendron Gardens in the Pisgah National Forest.

FROM THE RACE ORGANIZERS

A little more than a half marathon in distance (14 miles), but with lots of uphill as you race from the community of Roan Mountain, Tennessee to the finish at the Rhododendron Gardens at the near summit of Roan Mountain in North Carolina. The first 4.8 miles will have a bit more than 400 ft of elevation gain (2586 ft at the Start to 3000 ft at 4.8 miles), as the course follows the twisted shoreline of the Doe River and winds its way through Roan Mountain State Park. In the final 9 miles, you’ll enjoy more than 3200 ft of gain as you move to the finish at 6209 ft. The summit of Roan is 6285 ft. So, by our calculations, you’ll run 14 miles, with 3623 ft of elevation gain up one of the 6,000 ft mountains on Tennessee and North Carolina border.   To put this race in perspective, according to our research, Top of The South is the highest elevation road race finish in the Southeast USA…and we hate to admit it, but the 2nd highest finish East of the Mississippi River.
