Results of the Jeff Hewitt Memorial 5k – April 25, 2015 – Asheville NC
|FROM CORRESPONDENT VICTOR DOSTROW
This was the second year for this event, and the organizers largely worked the bugs out. The race, which is part of the Asheville Track Club GP circuit, is at The Cliffs at Walnut Cove, which is usually closed to outsiders. So, getting around is a bit of a mystery. However, signage was much improved, and there were more course marshals and cones. Parking was better organized. Also, last years’ “warm up lap” start did not occur. Overall, the race organization was solid. It was a bit cold and somewhat rainy at the gun. Have I mentioned how much I dislike racing in the rain? But, I digress… It’s a good course with a few significant hills. It’s closed to traffic, which allows for focusing on running rather than dodging vehicles. Turnout was somewhat less than last year, probably due to the rain, but this didn’t seem to dampen (as it were) enthusiasm. This was my second year to run this race, but it won’t be the last. A personal thanks to Lt. Hall of the Bucombe Co. Sheriff’s Dept. Congratulations to David Short as first overall and first male and Janet Bensley as first female.

Really liked the race this year! Looking forward to running it again next year! The volunteers and deputies were very very helpful and encouraging! Met Jeff’s mother, she spoke so highly of everyone there and all the moral support she has been given since her son was killed. Great seeing all those friendly deputies and Sheriff Van Duncan.
