Jeff Hewitt Memorial 5k – April 25, 2015 – Cliffs at Walnut Cove – Asheville NC

Jeff Hewitt Memorial 5k Logo

This is the second running of this race. I ran it in 2014 and it was a very nice course. The Cliffs at Walnut Cove is a terrific, scenic venue. Be sure to get there a bit early because it takes a little time to get from the gate to the race site. This race is part of the 2015 Asheville Track Club Grand Prix Series.

On April 4, 2004, our Sheriff’s Office suffered a tremendous loss when Sergeant Jeff Hewitt was killed in the line of duty. Jeff’s actions that night undoubtedly saved the lives of other officers, but in doing so he paid the ultimate sacrifice. The Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office will never forget the loss of our hero. The purpose of this memorial race is to raise money for the Jeff Hewitt Scholarship Fund at Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College. Not only will this event help a deserving young person start a career in law enforcement, but it will help share the story of our fallen hero who lived his life to serve his fellow officers and the citizens of Buncombe County.

The race will be chip timed by Right on Time Producations. Awards will be provided in women’s and men’s division, top two overall, top two masters and top three by age group – 1-9; 10-14; 15-19; 20-24; 25- 29; 30-34; 35- 39; 40-44; 45-49; 50-54; 55-59; 60-64; 65-69; 70-74; 75-79; and 80+.

The Cliffs at Walnut Cove is a pristine running venue for the Asheville – Buncombe County- running scene. The Cliffs with its grand view and mountain scenery is truly what draws runners to this area.

The Jeff Hewitt 5k and Memorial Walk will begin and end at the Wellness Center located at the heart of the Cliff at Walnut Cove. The 5k race will begin at 0800 and the Memorial Walk will begin at 0815.

The course will take the runner through the rolling hills and past the lagoon which make up a small part of the natural beauty of the course.

Race starts at 8 AM.
