Bearwallow Beast 5k – May 3, 2015 – Bearwallow Mountain – Gerton NC

Bearwallow Beast 5k

I’ve done the beast and it’s a blast. Sure, it runs like a four mile race for someone like me because of the ginormous climb involved. A little bit of semi-flat paved road, then a long haul up a gravel road. The good news is that after about two miles you switch to a single track switch back trail that, believe it or not, is a relief after the long climb up the gravel road. And the view from the top where you finish (and enjoy a major festival): priceless.

FROM THE RACE ORGANIZERS

Starting at the bottom of Bearwallow Mountain Rd in Gerton, NC, the Bearwallow Beast 5k features one of the most unrelenting climbs you’ll find in the Appalachians – over 1,400 feet. Traversing asphalt, forest service roads and single-track trail, the course will offer a challenge for even the most experienced runner.

Conserved in 2009, Bearwallow Mountain represents one of the crown jewels in the Upper Hickory Nut Gorge. Carolina Mountain Land Conservancy’s work combined with the generosity of the Barnwell family has ensured that 81 acres and counting on the summit of Bearwallow Mountain will be permanently protected and publicly accessible.
