This was my first race in over three months since I injured myself at the Downhill at Dawn Half Marathon on June 7th. It felt good to put on a bib and chip and get back out there again, especially after a couple of months without running and the past three weeks trying to get my foot speed and wind back.
This was a low-key race with a light turnout. The race started and finished in downtown Black Mountain and featured aspects of the Valentine 5k course. Unfortunately, there was an important turn early on in the race that was missed by at least the first 15 or so runners. It was a turn from Charlotte Street onto the Greenway. There was no person at the turn for guidance and the turn was marked with little orange flags that would not catch the eye of a passing runner. I didn’t see the turn, but some runners behind me noticed it and began calling ahead “wrong way.” Many of the times published here are not representative of the runners, especially those closest to the front the pack who did quite a bit of “bonus running” (the term used by Doug Methvin at Right on Time Productions). I don’t think my time was affected by more than about 15-20 seconds or so. You can see the turnaround in my Garmin data.
