Asheville, NC – On July 12, the end of an evening race at Highland Brewing will be illuminated by a full moon and glowing pints of beer. “Night Flight” is Highland’s first race and part of its 20th anniversary celebration in 2014. Proceeds will develop the planned greenway along the Swannanoa River in East Asheville.
A staff brainstorming session brought about the idea, which was an immediate fit for the runners on staff. But not everyone runs. “I’m no runner, but I’m glad to see a unique way to benefit the community and I’ll be enjoying my pint while you run around in the dark,” said founder Oscar Wong.
The race begins at 8pm. The brewery’s tasting room, deck and meadow provide ample space to enjoy a mountain evening in the summer. As a bonus, the post race event is also the release party for Anniversary Beer #8 in the series of 20 beers. This one is a dry-hopped American-Style Saison by brewer Paul Rollow. It will be available on tap and in 22oz bottles in limited quantities at the brewery that night.
Asheville’s long-range greenway plans create an impressive network of paths connecting all areas of the city. “There’s a lot of exciting greenway development downtown and in the River Arts district right now. Not much here on the east side. We want to help move connectivity ahead with this race,” said Leah Wong Ashburn. One path will run on the east side of the city near the brewery and along Swannanoa River Road. Highland’s donation will be earmarked for the path in its community. The Asheville Parks and Greenways Foundation will provide volunteers for the event. The Foundation’s Vice Board Chair, Ben Van Camp, said, “Having quality parks and greenways in Asheville is essential to our community vitality. This is a great opportunity to support this cause while celebrating the great success and impact Highland Brewing Company has had on our community.”
