Biltmore Kiwanis 15k and 5k – May 18, 2014 – Biltmore Estate, Asheville NC
|This is the 17th running of this terrific pair of races held on the ground of the Biltmore Estate on a spring Sunday morning.
OVERVIEW
Runners mark your calendars for Sunday, May 18th, 2014 at 7:15am, for the 17th Annual Biltmore/Kiwanis 15K/5K Classic Races. Both races are run entirely on the scenic grounds of Biltmore estate. The 15K begins at the Winery, climbs to the Deerpark Restaurant then descends and climbs along the main road to Biltmore House where runners will loop in front of the massive main entrance doors of the house. Runners next enter the Walled Garden, pass by the Azalea Garden and lagoon along the French Broad River, and then finish by returning to the Winery. The first half of the course has two challenging hills, while the second half is down hill to flat terrain. The 5K course will be a flat, out and back course starting at the Winery and paralleling the French Broad River.
When runners participate in the race, they are not only competing for medals, but also are helping to fund the Kiwanis Children’s Charities which supports several local youth programs. For example, the Kiwanis Club of Asheville provides book bags filled with school supplies each fall to children in need as they begin the school year. To encourage attendance and punctuality in several of the local elementary schools, the club gives away a bicycle each quarter, by way of a drawing, to children with perfect attendance and punctuality. The Club also aids in elementary school spelling bees and co¬sponsors the annual “Pawndemonium,” a regional chess tournament for school children.
