WHY? Whats wrong with the half ?
I don’t think there’s anything wrong with the half marathon that’s been held for four consecutive years at DuPont Forest. However, the increase in the number of competitive races can impact the success and viability of a race – especially a half marathon that has greater logistical requirements and costs. The introduction of a new spring marathon at the Biltmore Estate in 2013 and the addition of a spring half marathon at Biltmore Estate in 2014 place greater competitive pressure on a race like this. Runners are more willing to do an extra 10k here or there but many limit the number of half marathons they’ll do because of training requirements and cost. The proof is in the numbers – here are the number of finishers in the DuPont Half Marathon since it started in 2010: 2010 – 234 finishers, 2011 – 266 finishers, 2012 – 146 finishers, 2013 – 142 finishers.
