Asheville Citizen-Times City Marathon + Half Marathon – Course Map – September 27, 2013 – Asheville, NC

From the race organizers:

Welcome to Asheville’s City Marathon. The Asheville Citizen-Times is proud to host the inaugural event in our dynamic city and is grateful to the City of Asheville, Town of Woodfin, Buncombe County and all its citizens for allowing us the opportunity to expand our great event into this celebration, whose impact will be felt well beyond one special weekend.

Race weekend will be held Thursday through Saturday, September 26-28, 2012 and will include a Race Expo on Thursday and Friday, a downtown 5K on Friday night using the same course we have used for the past four years. On Saturday morning, the festivities move to Woodfin Street for the start and finish of our new marathon and half marathon.

We are extremely excited about our new half marathon course and redesigned half marathon course. The two races will start and stay together for the first 7.5 miles before splitting on Riverside Drive. Marathon runners will explore a rural part of Buncombe County before going past the site of the future New Belgium Brewery and into West Asheville. After leaving our western neighborhoods, runners will have four flat miles along the French Broad River before going into the River Arts District and back to downtown for the finish and post-race party.

Those who have run the half marathon before will recognize many familiar sites, including some we haven’t used in a while, a few new ones and two of our famous hills – Lookout Mountain and Broadway.

Together, these three races represent what running in Asheville, North Carolina is all about: a few hills, great people, and an experience you won’t find anywhere else.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

The Marathon is new so there’s nothing to compare, but at a glance I think this half marathon course will be faster. From the race organizers:

The Friday night 5K will begin and end at the traditional venue – the Asheville Citizen-Times on O Henry Avenue and will feature the same course we have used for the past four years. This family friendly event will get the race weekend off to a rousing start.
