Hotter than Haiti 10k – August 11, 2012 – Asheville Outdoor Center – French Broad Greenway – Asheville, NC
|A new 10k race with a unique course, starting at the Asheville Outdoor Center (near Carrier Park) and traveling the French Broad Greenway and up into West Asheville. Here is additional information about the race and Consider Haiti, the organization that benefits from the race.
The Hotter than Haiti 10K will be taking place on Saturday, August 11th @ 8:00 AM. The race starts and finishes at the Asheville Outdoor Center along the river and near Carrier Park and the campground.
The race will benefit “Consider Haiti” – or most recently known as Mission Manna. We recently changed the name to Consider Haiti to avoid further local confusion with Manna FoodBank and Mission Hospitals.
Consider Haiti is a 10+ year old local volunteer driven organization focused solely on improving children’s health in Haiti. We work primarily in the Montrouis area of Haiti and strive to achieve our goals by:
- taking two medical trips per year (all paid for by the individual volunteers);
- sustainable nutrition (in the form of goats, rabbits, and a host of crops we are growing);
- Community Health agents (all Haitians) that work ad check in with the sickest families/children, and
- Clean water programs- using biosand water filters.
Race timing will be handled by Right on Time Productions. Here is a description of the course (followed by a map):
Official route of the first annual Hotter than Haiti 10K – August 11, 2012 8:00 AM. Race starts and finishes at the Asheville Outdoor Center. The course is mostly along the French Broad River and Hominy Creek including an out and back on the Hominy Creek Greenway in West Asheville.
The Asheville Police Department is fully on board and have approved this route. In addition, we will have two police officers along the 100 yard section of the course on Shelburne Road.
The only roads the course runs on is Shelburne Road (about 100 yards) and Hominy Creek Road.

Online registration is available at IMAthlete. For more information about Consider Haiti, visit the organizations’ website.

That looks like a pretty solid route.
Hi all- we have changed the Hotter than Haiti 10K route to make it safer. Our organizing committee met with the Asheville Police Department this week to review our proposed changes and they are fully on board and have approved this route. In addition, we will have two police officers along the 100 yard section of the course on Shelburne Road. Here’s a link to the revised route:

Paul, they sure could. There’s more traffic involved, but it is possible.
For example, the route could go up the trail, then NE on Sand Hill Road to Haywood Road, then run back down State Street to the park. That is probably close to six miles. I have not measured it.
Or the race could use the same course, but be run in the opposite direction.
Or (coming from either direction) the route could go almost to Haywood Road but avoid it, using streets like Olney, Wells Ave., Fairfax, Hudson, etc. in order to get between Sand Hill Road to State Street.
All of these options involve a crossing of Brevard Road. That final option (the one that avoids Haywood Road) would involve a lot of turns, and so it would also mandate the need for a LOT more course marshals.
Jeff,
I could make suggestions. But first, I would like to hear what suggestions the police made. E-mail would be useful. You can contact me at kenmiller0 at gmail
Ken
Ken, I wonder if they could incorporate Hominy Creek Trail over to Sand Hill and then up to Haywood. Paul
Hi Ken- I am on the organizing committee for the Hotter than Haiti 10K. Our Race Director ironically met with the Asheville Police today to drive/walk the course. As a result of the meeting, we may be slightly altering the route AND adding additional Police protection. Do you have any race route suggestions?
Thanks-
I have run all of this course, at one time or another. However, I’ve only run Shelburne downhill, and this course runs people up Shelburne. Shelburne is curvy, and there can be a lot of cars on it. I generally don’t run on Shelburne because there are far safer streets in the area. There are no sidewalks or bike lanes or anything on the sides. I hope there will be measures in place to protect the runners on Shelburne. .
