Super Hero 5k – November 12, 2011 – Asheville Brewing Company – Asheville, NC

Start of the Super Hero 5k

Every year, in early November, runners from around western North Carolina gather downtown at the Asheville Brewing Company on Coxe Avenue, shed their alter-egos and become Super Heroes for a few hours. Some are recognizable favorites like Spiderman and Captain America while some are ingenious inventions stimulated by Ashevillian creativity.

One such super hero came on the scene in 2007, the first year of the Super Hero 5k. I can’t give away his hidden identity because, well, it’s hidden. That’s the way this super hero stuff is supposed to work. But imagine that I’m Clark Kent and this hero is Superman. That’s fine, but he’s not Superman. He’s Souperman.

By day, he’s a mild-mannered sous chef for an eclectic, cosmopolitan bistro. By night – when the sun goes down and the wind blows cold, he becomes Souperman – warming the hearts, souls and bellies of the masses.

His weapons are varied and they include the likes of Five Onion, Chicken with Wild Rice, Potato Corn Chowder and White Bean and Chicken Chili.

With cape and chef hat and ladle as his peace-keeping device, Souperman is expected to appear at his 4th Super Hero 5k this year.

This is an afternoon race, starting at 4:30 PM with post-race festivities (such as pizza and adult beverages) afterward.  For information and registration, visit the race page at Active.com.
