|A popular trail challenge that starts at the base of a quarry and offers great scenery and uphill challenge as participants run to the top of the quarry and back down again.
From the race organizers:
This year we are teaming up with LEAF and hosting the race the Saturday of their festival! Registration is $25 and includes long-sleeved race t-shirt and refreshments post-race. LEAFers are eligible to register in the LEAFers catetgory and receive $5 discount! Also, you can register for the Fun Dash for only $10. Dash race includes race bag and post-race snacks. Race proceeds go to The Black Mountain Home for Children, Colburn Earth Science Museum, and LEAF School & Streets. The trail begins at the Picnic Shelter at base of the quarry. A flat beginning, the first mile follows gravel haul road, past beaver ponds, and through wooded trail. The wooded section is about ½ mile uphill with a creek crossing. Participants come out onto the haul road for a one mile stretch that is straight uphill to the top edge of the quarry to a panoramic view of the Swannanoa Valley, Black Mountain range, and North Fork Watershed. The trail narrows and descends down the forested mountainside. Participants pass by horse pastureland of neighboring Camp Rockmont and finish at the Picnic Shelter.
