Phoebe's Pancake Palooza

Phoebe is having some very important surgery on August 17th and her family and friends are organizing this festival and 5k race to help raise money to offset some of the substantial costs associated with this surgery.

Phoebe Rose Miller is a 4 year old Asheville resident that is facing brain surgery. After months of severe headaches, she was diagnosed (Dec. 2009) with a very rare congenital malformation in her brain called a Chiari I Malformation (Kee-ah-ree). Her neurosurgeon is Dr. Ben Carson at Johns Hopkins Medical Institution. After experiencing a steady progression of symptoms related to the Chiari, Dr. Carson decided to schedule a Cervicomedullary Decompression surgery for August 17, 2010.

Phoebe’s family and friends are organizing this fundraising event because $10,000 dollars must be sent to Johns Hopkins before Phoebe arrives for surgery. Phoebe is covered by Blue Cross/Blue Shield insurance. Her daddy works 2 jobs to provide this insurance, but the cost after insurance is billed could total up to $50,000 more. This does not including the expense of the Miller family being in Baltimore for the duration of surgery and recovery. If surgery is delayed for too long, the resulting neurological damage would be irreversible.

Please run this race at 8:00 AM on Saturday, August 7. If you can’t run the race, please make a donation or come to the festival to show your support.

Race Begins 8:00 am (registration 7:00)
