Interesting new addition to the broad lineup of Firecracker races on July 3, 2010.
Here’s what the race organizer has to say …
The inaugural Columbus Firecracker 5k run is brought to you by the experienced runners of the Saluda Running Club — the same folks who previously sponsored the Coon Dog Day 5k.
Starting time is 8:00 a.m., Saturday, July 3, 2010, at the Columbus, NC. Town Office, and will be run over a 5k course with professional timing.
Cash awards will go to the top three overall male and female winners. Merchandise awards will be given to the first place overall Masters — male and female; and trophies will be awarded to the winners in many categories.
The Firecracker 5k promises to be a major event in the town of Columbus Fabulous 4th celebration, but there will also be many other fun activities for runners and their families. Activities beginning after the race include family games, food and craft vendors, and a Tai Chi class. Music begins in the afternoon and continues until the fireworks display at 9:45 p.m.
I was a big fan of the Coon Dog Day 5k (rest in peace) and hope this race is as well organized and fun as that gem of a 5k.

From the EAST (Spartanburg) — Leave I-26 at NC Exit 67 (Columbus/Tryon). When you reach the exit roundabout, go 1/4 way around to East on Rt-108 into Columbus. Turn right at the first traffic signal onto Walker St. Go one long block and turn left onto Ward St. Proceed to the Post Office parking lot on the right.
From the WEST (Asheville) — Leave I-26 at NC Exit 67 (Columbus/Tryon). On the exit ramp bear right to Columbus/Tryon. When you reach the exit roundabout, go 3/4 way around to East on Rt-108 into Columbus. Turn right at the first traffic signal onto Walker St. Go one long block and turn left onto Ward St. Proceed to the Post Office parking lot on the right.
