This was a great race on several dimensions. It’s good to get a race at the Arboretum again and it’s good to have a moderate trail race that is very convenient to Asheville.

The event is part of the Wellness campaign for State employees employed by the Department of Crime Control and Public Safety – (State Highway Patrol, NC National Guard and NC Alcohol Law Enforcement).

This is one of the most buttoned-up races I have ever seen. Swarms of State Troopers, Fire Department Personnel, Police Department Personnel and Police Academy Personnel working the race and running the race.

We even had a helicopter there! It was the State Highway Patrol helicopter.

The race started a little late (8:15 instead of 8:00). The race required that you park at the Biltmore Baptist Church and take the shuttle bus to the Arboretum. That was a very smooth and well-run process, but it inevitably creates some timing issues.

We lined up at 8:15 and took off on a mostly downhill (moderately) for the first mile on pavement, double track trails and forest service roads. We then went through two miles of ups and downs on moderately technical double track trails before settling into more forest service roads and a return to the start.

It was a little warm and humid and the course was long. I compared distances with other Garminites and with five data points all were 5.3 – 5.4 miles (that would make it more like a 9k).

The awards were amazing. The first place overall finishers received really nice backpacks and enormous trophies. The first place age group finishers got nice backpacks and trophies too. I was third place in my age group and I got a cool little belt-pouch that is perfect for carrying my cell phone and keys. All in all, I think the people that put this race on (The Highway Patrol) did an awesome job.

This race could be a long-term classic. It’s a great course and these people put it on with military precision.

    Thanks for the great report and results! Its a cool course and what a treat that it was well run. I had asked them if it wasn’t actually 9k after going to MapMyRun… glad to have that confirmed. Congrats on the great race swag, too! I hope we have a chance to run this one next year.

      I have run the exact same course about 25 times over the past few years. It’s my favorite Arboretum workout. I start and finish down in the parking lot and it’s 5.2 round trip. When I saw where the finish was I knew that the start would need to be somewhere down the road toward the greenhouse or it would be more than 8k. But I don’t mind – it was great.
