Results of running the Morris Broadband DuPont Forest Half Marathon – April 10, 2010

RESULTS of the 2010 Morris Broadband DuPont Forest Half Marathon
It was a great day for the Morris Broadband DuPont Forest Half Marathon. Temperatures were in the upper 30s/low 40s at race start and they rose at a nice pace throughout the race. Bright sunshine made for a scenic race. I’d like to give a big shoutout to the entire team that helped make this happen: race director Greg Walker and the team at Fletcher Parks & Recreation (Larry, Chris), Aaron Saft and the Foot Rx Asheville team and all of the great volunteers (Bob, Melanie, Duncan and many, many more).
The course starts with about a mile and a half downhill (note to self – race director Greg Jackson points out that we’re coming back the same way so save a few of your Wheaties for that long pull after 11 miles or so). Then it starts rolling – and this race has some big elevation changes (check out the map/elevation by clicking on the elevation icon at the top of this post – nearly 9,000 feet). What I liked about this rolling course is that the uphills are long but they are followed by long downhills that allow for good recovery and preparation for the next uphill. The variety is quite nice – two lakes and up and down the entire length of the old asphalt airstrip in the forest. You don’t get to run up and down an airstrip in your garden variety half marathon (this one has great long range views and an old basketball hoop with a net about halfway down the strip).
I felt very good today and was amazed that I finished the race at 1:57:28 and a 9:06 pace – exactly the same pace I ran two weeks ago at the DuPont Forest 12k (but today’s race had an extra 9k slapped onto that to make it 21k).
I have included results below (courtesy of Lee Timing, a company has has done a lot of timing work throughout North Carolina). Age Group Results are below the overall results.

AGE GROUP RESULTS
Anybody know where to see pictures of the race? I went to the Chuck Hill photo site, but you have to have a log-in to view events. Thanks for any info!
If you go to http://www.chuckhillphotography.com now they have included the user name and password that will allow you to view the photos.
did anyone catch the order of finish for the relays?
Jay – here are links to the relay team results …

Until a year ago I had never run a mile in my life. I got started running b/c my daughter wanted me to be her partner in Girls on the Run. I had no intention of continuing until I felt compelled to train for the DuPont 1/2. It was the first I had heard of organized trail races. I loved everything about the race and hope to do it again next year. Many thanks to the volunteers and organizers who made it possible!
Congratulations!
Willie Mejia ran a great race on Saturday, man or woman! Once we received word of the error we edited the results and re-posted them to our web site.
We routinely screen registration data for obvious errors before it goes into our timing system but we don’t always find them all. To all the Sam’s, Chris’s, and Willie’s out there: we’re doing our best!
I really like the fact that I came in 4th among men however I am a female. Could you award me 1st place standing in my age group?
I passed your comment on to the race director and the timing company.
As my 2nd-ever race (my first was the DuPont Forest 12k last year) I found it grueling and wonderful simultaneously. Thanks to all the volunteers, your water was delicious and your finish-line banana was ripe and nourishing. I give credit to ALL who finished, not just the first ones. A race it was indeed but more importantly, it was a nice run in the woods. We should all just throw away our stopwatches, maybe we’d spend more time enjoying ourselves!
Lets just clear this up Matthew Schmitt, so that you can take your smugness and move on. When a volunteer is telling you to run a certain direction (actually a few volunteers), one would generally follow those instructions. One might also think that running 13.6 miles, as opposed to 13.1 miles would result in a time credit, especially when, again, you were told to run in the wrong direction.
Interesting. If someone told me that taking a wrong turn on the course resulted in an adjustment, I would’ve done that to begin with and had a much better time. Stay on the right side of the cones was the instruction I remember, not to difficult.
I think that’s the rules with the Masters as well. If you hit your ball in the water, you just adjust your score as though you hadn’t. Nascar as well, if you hadn’t have crashed, you probably would’ve done better, so we’ll just adjust your time.
Congrats on the win Jay.
Rebecca, the reason a different name was listed as first place is because that individual (KL) ran an extra half mile. Jay came in across the finish line first, but wasn’t misdirected by the volunteers like KL was. After they did the time correction (which came out to around 2:30 per individual that ran the extra .5 miles), they reexamined the results and put folks in their proper places.
Overall, it was an excellent race, and even though I was also misdirected, don’t want that to take away from the race. This wasn’t the fault of the race directors, just a few volunteers who weren’t paying attention (which you’ll find at any race). I look forward to running it next year and hope it becomes a mainstay!
If I had seen that profile beforehand – I may have reconsidered! Glad I ran though – enjoyed the course (except maybe an hill or three) and the people!
Results are posted on leetiming.com now. A little more confusion – Jay Curwen clearly finished first for everyone who saw it but there’s a different name listed as first overall.
Good luck making any sense out the results on this one…they were talking about doing a time correction for those of us who were sent the wrong way. I’m guessing they gave up, though.
