A nice pair of races on the morning of Saturday, April 3, 2010. The races start at 9:00 AM. The courses look quite good with plenty of time running right along the lake. Last year this was an 8k/5k combination but this year they’ve decided to boost the long run to a 10k.
Here is a map of the courses (click on the image for a larger image) …

And here are directions to the races …
Coming from East (from Asheville-25 miles):
From I-40, take exit 27 onto US 19-23.
Drive 3-4 miles.
Do not take exit 104 — it is easy to get lost.
Take exit 103 and drive about 1 mile until you see Lake Junaluska Conference and Retreat Center front entrance gates on the right.
Bear right and follow the main road to the Bethea Welcome Center.

Hi Dennis,
We will be at the Falafal 5k this coming weekend. This will be our last race probably until the Biltmore 15k in May.
Eve and I ran the 5k at Furman University this past Saturday. What a beautiful campus! The weather was perfect. I won grandmasters and Eve took 3rd in masters.
Be good.
Bart and Eve
I ran a half marathon a few years ago and part of it went through the Furman Campus. That was the best part of the race.
I think I’m going to do the Falafel Sunday so hopefully we’ll be able to meet face to face. I look forward to it. I’m also doing the Biltmore 15k. The DuPont Half Marathon on Saturday was a good warm-up for Biltmore.
Best regards,
Dennis
Thanks Bart. I thought very hard about running that race instead of the Greenway but went for the “close by” race. I saw some last minute updates from the Junaluska race organizers that said last minute course adjustments would make the 10k course 6.3.
Congratulations to you and Eve on great results. And I think it’s so cool that you camped out nearby. I look forward to meeting you soon. Please let me know what your near-term race plans are because we just seem to keep missing each other!
Hello Dennis,
Eve and I ran the Lake Junaluska 10k this morning. Beautiful weather and cloud cover. Most of the course was relatively flat near the start and finish but hilly on the east side of the lake; killer hill between 4 and 5 mile mark that had a lot of runners gearing down to walking mode. I finished 3rd overall so I was pleased with that. Eve finished 4th overall female. Times were slow due to the nature of the course. This was our first time visit Lake Junaluska and we really enjoyed ourselves. We camped in our pop-up camper across the road from the Assembly grounds the night before the race so we made a fun little trip out of it.
Thanks for the great reporting on the local races. Many of us greatly appreciate the running news you provide for the running community.
Bart
