Results of Black Mountain Valentine’s Day 5k – February 20, 2010

A boatload of runners lined up with ear-to-ear grins for the delayed running of the Black Mountain Valentine’s Day 5k.  The weather could not have been better with bright sunshine and temperatures in the mid-50s.  It was so nice to be able to show up for a race in shorts and short sleeves instead of tights, layers of long-sleeved shirts, hat and gloves.

The race started with a half mile on the paved path that runs from Black Mountain Recreation Park down towards the South Campus of Montreat College and onto the quiet little streets of the south side of Black Mountain.  The course (modified slightly this year to start and finish at Recreation Park, rather than Montreat) had originally included a lap through the park at the finish.  However, the insane winter weather we’ve had for the past two months made running in the park a bad idea.  So, instead we did a loop through a vacant Chevrolet dealership before heading back toward the park.  It’s not the most interesting thing but it gave runners the opportunity to see those a few minutes ahead of you on the way in and those a few minutes behind you on the way out.

All in all a great race and worth the wait.  Now, let’s do it again today at the Frostbite 5k in Fletcher.  More great weather!
