The Super Hero (aka Superhero) – 5k – Asheville, North Carolina – November 7, 2009
|
Update: results are in …
The 3rd running of the Superhero 5k is coming up fast. At 4:30 PM on Saturday, November 7, 2009 hundreds of Super Heroes (some in their super form and some in their clandestine alter ego form) will run 5,000 meters through bits of downtown Asheville, scooting across the footbridge that spans I240, with many more bits of Montford, past the Chamber of Commerce back to the footbridge and the finish. This event is presented by the Asheville Brewing Company and will start and finish at 77 Coxe Avenue, Asheville, North Carolina, 28801.
I didn’t do this in 2008. But I did it in 2007. I had a blast. Here is my character in 2007. I think it needs a little update, but I will still be … Souperman!

Every Superhero needs a story. Here is the Souperman story (which was, and will be attached to his cape) …
By day, he’s a mild-mannered sous chef for an eclectic, cosmopolitan bistro. By night – when the sun goes down and the wind blows cold, he becomes Souperman – warming the hearts, souls and bellies of the masses.
His weapons are varied and they include the likes of Five Onion, Chicken with Wild Rice, Potato Corn Chowder and White Bean and Chicken Chili.
Now, running in a cape is … well like running with a parachute. It’s not going to enhance your time. But, it’s a 4:30 PM race so if you like a beer or a bit of wine you can have that at the Asheville Brewing Company where an enormous party emerges at the end of the race.

Actually, it wasn’t until about 5 or 6 miles until I even SAW you at Bethel!! lol.
And being in the back at this race will be a fun time, because I suspect it’ll be where the fun Asheville “Hey, let’s wear a costume” people will be lurking!
The after race party will make it all worth while 🙂
Unfortunately we all get our chances to defend the back of the pack and leave no runner behind. I had my chance at Bethel where you said goodbye at about mile 3 and had time for a shower and a bowl of soup before I shuffled across the finish line. But this race has a party afterward!
A fun time, I’ve done this one in ’07 & ’08. Not a lot of folks in costume, DD’s estimate sounds right (and none as cool as Souperman!) but overall, it’s a blast! The best after-race party around, pizza and beer (it just doesn’t get any better then that 🙂
I’m running as Injured Reserve Man, Defender of the Back-Of-The-Pack!
What percentage of runners are in costume? Sounds like a fun event!
I’d guess less than half. I added a photo of the starting line from the 2007 race to the posting and you can get a sense of how many are in costume.
I dug up the results and sure enough – you were just a few seconds behind Souperman, probably tangled up in his cape. 🙂

If I’m not mistaken, I finished close behind Souperman in the 2007 Superhero 5K.
