Results of the Southcliff Black and Blue, October 17, 2009
|

It was fine weather for this event in my book. Little chance of over-heating and no need for the sun glasses. Wet leaves and some mud here and there makes the footing a little tricky on the downhill, but that’s what races like this are all about. We had 92 brave finishers of the Black race and 43 for the Blue race. Impeccably run by race director Greg Duff, great post race food (thanks to Urban Burrito) and a fabulous fireside setting.
Here are the results of the Black race (Blue results are below Black results )…

Ken’s right 🙂
Actually, I may trade places with Ray next year, and I’ll do the Scamper instead! lol.
I think some of us just may not be cut out for trail running…then again, once I recover, I may rethink it!
What a great race!
For me at least, it was definitely a humbling experience. I learned today that you can’t just train for the race, but you also must train for the climate and the altitude. Can’t wait to come back next year, and bring a much better time with me!
When there are two distances, ATC gives GP points for the longer of the two races.
They give points for the Black race.
Thank you I did the Springmaid and it is very tough. I love the water crossings but when your only 5’3″ the water can get high. I have ran the scamper 2 years in a row so maybe next year I will switch. Is it the Black or Blue that you get ATC points?
My opinion sort of mirrors Dennis’ race time comparison…they’re the same-but different (one of my favorite sayings 🙂 and both tough.
The initial 3 miles uphill for the Black are crushing, and then the downhill is steep enough that when you’re tired, it gets real dicey.
Springmaid’s terrain is more varied, but it has water (which folks love or hate, no in-between) and the hills aren’t quite as steep, but there are a lot more roots sticking up, and they get tougher as you get more tired.
If you love the trails, they’re both worth doing. If you’re like me, you may be considering that the road races are more forgiving.
One man’s opinion!
I just did a quick review of four runners who did both the Springmaind 10k and the Southcliff Black race in 2009.
Female #1: Springmaid – 1:02, Southcliff – 1:02
Female #2: Springmaid 1:05, Southcliff – 1:07
Male #1: Springmaid 55:07, Southcliff – 56:49
Male #2: Springmaid 1:11, Southcliff – 1:11
Pretty close.
I doubt it. I have not done the Springmaid, but it sounds tougher. Bob G. has done both and I think Greg J. has done both so they would be better able to comment.
Is the Black course tougher than the springmaid splash?
Oh yeah. I don’t know about the Blue course (the shorter) but the Black (6.5) is 3 miles uphill. The first mile is pavement, then it’s onto the dirt/leaves/rocks/roots/switchbacks trail. Then it’s downhill mostly on the same trails with about 3/4 of a mile on a gravel road.
I look at the times on both races and realize that they were both steep. The winner of the Blue race used up 22 minutes to finish a 2.6 mile course? It must be due to a tough course, because the winner is a really strong runner. She’s fast. I know because I remember that she finished that Frostbite race in February really fast. There must have been some rough terrain.
Hope your foot is better soon. The AG changes didn’t impact me. All the fast guys in the 50-59 AG were between 50-54 and there were three under 60 minutes. So I would have been shut out by them even with the 5 year AGs. But you and Larry would have gone home with coasters if it were 5 year AGs.
Thanks for the results, Dennis-and to Nancy for the great photos (with the exception of your truly 🙂
It was a fun day, although I ended up with PF in the right foot…they switched to 10 year AG for the first time (although they did advertise it as such). I couldn’t find the mile markers (except for the 1st) and that may have been due to trying not to fall on my face!
Concur with the great food, and the fire-nice touches.
But I’m thinking maybe Burnsville next year…
