Hope for Horses 5k – Run With the Horses – Results – Asheville, NC – September 20, 2009
|On a cool, rainy Sunday afternoon, 81 brave and soggy runners, dozens of kind volunteers and spectators, generous sponsors, a bunch of dogs and a miniature horse turned up for the 2009 Run for the Horses 5k. It was a great course spanning downtown to the Grove Park area. Many thanks to the race organizers for a great event.

Agree completely with your comments on the race, Ken. And thanks for the observations on the awards issue; it sounds like Mr. Wood got his due for placing 1st. Then again, another new entrant into the AG…sigh. 🙂
Hope for Horses puts on a first-class race. They seemed to dot their i’s and cross their t’s. Those awards are really nice. I hope they hold the race again next year, under sunny skies, so they can get a bigger (and much deserved) turnout.
Bob and Preston– I was only paying partial attention, but I believe that the presenters located the 1st place 55-59 fellow (Sparrel Wood), and he got a 1st award also. I did see them call him up for an award in the 55-59 female category, and he politely refused to take that award.
Hey Preston,
Just saw your post and since we’re in the same AG (55-59) I went to RMS and saw the AG listing and you are right on the money. I received the 3rd place AG award and I actually came in 4th. So if there’s a way we can facilitate the exchange with you, Florindo and the gentleman that came in 1st, I’m all for it…especially since A) I didn’t earn that cool horseshoe award and B) I’d need 3 more to shoe my horse anyway (if I had one 🙂
GREAT ORGANIZATION, GREAT AWARDS, GREAT CAUSE, WOULD HAVE BEEN A GREAT DAY HAD THE WEATHER COOPERATED. MY HAT IS OFF TO ALL VOLUNTEERS AND RACE DIRECTOR!
NOTE THAT I RECEIVED THE 1ST PLACE AGE GROUP FOR 55-59 WITH A TIME OF 23:02 BUT IN THE RESULTS THERE IS A PERSON IN MY AGE GROUP THAT FINISHED AHEAD OF ME. I RECEIVED THE 1ST PLACE AWARD BUT FEEL HE DESERVES IT SO HOW CAN I RETURN IT?
As I mentioned in my other post, a fun time, great (albeit damp) spirits, vendors with goodies to hand out (my dogs loved the treats from Pet Supplies Plus), great cause, lots of dogs and a little horse…and no donuts, but…cookies!
Course is a challenge as all in AVL are, but the rain kept one cool, and nice downhill to the last tenth…
