A nice 5k on a Sunday afternoon, starting in downtown Asheville and cruising through the Grove Park area. The course has aspects in common with the start of the ACT Half Marathon and should be fun. The race starts at 2 PM.
From the race website …
The 3rd Annual Run for the Horses 5K Run & 1-Mile Fun Walk & Dog Parade is set for Sunday, September 20 at 2 p.m. in historic downtown Asheville, NC. The event will take place in the Buncombe County Health Department parking lot at 25 Woodfin Street across from the YMCA.
This certified course takes runners on a scenic yet challenging run through downtown Asheville, set in the majestic Blue Ridge Mountains. A popular, family-friendly event, the race has expanded this year to include a whimsical dog parade along with the one-mile fun walk and a great line-up of vendor booths offering everything from pets for adoption to the latest running gear.
Tasty treats will be provided by Food Lion grocery store and refreshments compliments of McGuire, Wood, & Bissette and Pepsi will be on hand. The course is managed and certified by RMS Race Management Systems and is on the Asheville Track Club’s Grand Prix Circuit. Kids can enjoy decorating craft horses, dancing to the music, face painting, and petting our mascots, Joey and David-two friendly miniature horse. There will be wonderful raffle prizes and awards will be given to the top three runners in each age division for male and female as well as best overall male and female. Special prizes will also be given for the top three dogs in the parade.

This too was my 2nd time at the race and concur with Ray’s comments! If anything the awards were even cooler this year; the rain may have dampened the attendance but not the spirits of the crowd. Loved seeing all the dogs, the little pony, and the hills of AVL (enjoy running in the rain-keeps the engine from overheating)
And no donuts, BUT…cookies! 🙂
Yes 100% rain was correct. This race is one of my favorites. When you get your packet there is always neat stuff in the bag. Nice door prizes and the awards are horse shoes. Not too keen on the course, flowing traffic is always hard to run with. I did this race last year and even though it rained it is still one of the best.
Sadly, I was referencing MY AG, which is 55-59, or whatever the race officials decide! lol.
Whatever those groupings actually are, I’ll ride the horse till I’m done!
See you all out there!
I think the website is wrong. I just looked at the event brochure and it has what are probably the correct age groups that we always operate in.
I just noticed that this race lists unusual age groups. Instead of 30-34, 35-59, etc. it is 31-35, 36-40. Don’t know if it’s a mistake, but it’s what is listed at All Sport Central where registration was. May not mean too much, but for me, instead of being in 50-54, I’m in 46-50. Actually works better because if Bill Branson shows up (he was 25th overall in the ACT Half Marathon) he’s not in my age group (he’s 51). Now if Lincoln shows up that’s another story (he’s 50 like me).
See all you horses out there!
HEY! Who you calling old? 30 is the new 20, right? lol
And hopefully the other old guys will take that advice as well..going to head out a little early, since there was a little flooding around this morning when I went out…
That said/typed, a fun race, a great cause, and usually smell like a wet horse (when I run, that is) anyway!
Okay, so maybe all the runners in the 30-34 age group should just stay home in their comfy houses and snuggle up to a good movie and cocoa.
And some cold, wet runners. Accuweather states a 100% chance of precipitation at 2 PM. Based on the way it’s been raining since the wee hours of this morning, I believe it.
Those are going to be some wet, smelly horses.
