Asheville Citizen-Times 5k – September 12, 2009
|

I spent plenty of time blogging about the Half Marathon because that’s the race I’m running. But the 5k is a great new course and a very good opportunity to win or place in an age group because so many runners will be doing the half marathon, leaving plenty of opportunities for awards in the 5k. It’s not too late to register — go to www.citizen-times.com/race.

The half starts at 7:30, then the 5K starts at 8:00. Correct?
Yes. 7:30 for the half and 8:00 for the 5k.
I like the idea of everyone doing a similar course, and also starting at the same time as well…it’s even more festive! That said/typed, there is the contention that the fast folks in the Half may get “caught up” in the 5k pace and go out too fast…that’s never a problem for me 🙂
They also need to consider moving the start…the only area where real congestion occurs is in front of the ACT building-after that it spreads out pretty quickly.
I agree. All runners deserve a little treat near the end of a race and Walnut Street is just that. We get to enjoy it after about 12.8 miles so I think it’s appropriate that the 5k runners get to enjoy it at about 2.8 miles.
I think it’s a good idea to have the 5K start and finish similarly to the half. That way, runners who run different races still have a certain amount of shared experience. They can (and will) compare their impressions of parts of the course.
In other words, after the race, ALL the runners can sing the praises of Walnut Street. I’d hate it if all the 5K runners had to miss out on Walnut Street.
No it’s very different. It follows the half marathon course up to Hillside and then comes back on Liberty for a finish similar to the half. Last year it went down to McCormick Field and up Charlotte Street and then found its way back to the Arcade.
Dennis,
Is the 5K route the same as it was last year?
