Run to Rock – Chimney Rock 5k – Results – August 30, 2009
|
It was a great run starting in the town of Chimney Rock just a few hundred yards from the entrance to Chimney Rock Park. The weather was warmer than I would have expected with temperatures in the mid 60s when I got out of my car. Nice turnout (73 finishers) for such an ambitious race. First thing I realized: I forgot my Garmin so I have no idea of my pace and distance. Hmm. Liberating.
The start is a gentle glide to the park entrance followed by a wood bridge crossing and a rude awakening.
It’s all uphill.
I was so entertained by a runner who ran with his black lab (or lab mix?). The beautiful dog was so excited and pulled the runner from the start and then got a nice drink at water station number one. (NOTE: later on the dog splashed and had great fun in the kiddie pool at the top full of ice for creating cool head wraps for hot runners).
It was about a mile or so uphill to the open area (I guess for picnic opportunities). The open area was a little hot. Then we went back to attacking the mountain with many switchbacks, but fortunately protected by thick trees. The final pull through the parking lot is a welcome end to a really challenging but fun race! I’ll do it again next year.

Does anyone know where the 2011 Race to the Rock results can be found for the 5K?
Here’s the men:

Here’s the women:

I got an XL and it was cut small (that’s my excuse anyway); it was a “technical” shirt (although I realize that definition has yet to achieve some kind of industry standard. As opposed to most runners, I prefer getting a cotton shirt, as I don’t wear them when running, only to proclaim that I accomplished the race (helpful when I’m at IHOP).
Strange, it advertised all THREE races in the “Olympiad”: Friday night’s “Race to The Dam”, Saturday’s triathlon and Sunday’s Race to The Rock. I don’t know how many did all 3, but I doubt that it was that many.
There was a shirt available. If you signed up well enough ahead of time they had a nice little bag available for you at the finish with your shirt and all the other goodies. I signed up just a couple days ahead of time and they didn’t have a bag for me but they did offer me a shirt. They had mediums and extra large but I didn’t want either of those. They eagerly offered to mail me a large but I told them that I really didn’t need another race shirt.
Did you guys get shirts?
4 legs are always better than 2! ‘Course, when I go with Luke and Chewbacca, it’s like 8 legs are better than 2!
You’re also right about the social time, even though we left a bit early…it’s not like I had to wait for the awards, like you did! 🙂
Plus, I owed Melanie breakfast for getting up early on a Sunday!
Agreed Bob. That dog was great. Eager, while his human was patient and thoughtful. And with all that waiting around for the doggie — they still beat me! And the post-race socializing was particularly good at this race because many runners stay until the shuttle buses come (unless they have a driver like you did).
It was pretty much all uphill, wasn’t it?? 🙁
Agree with you, Dennis-actually a fun time (especially AFTER as opposed to DURING) and I got to see that gorgeous pup take a plop down in a mud puddle as we approached the picnic area-made me laugh out loud, as well as being impressed that the dog’s human waited patiently until the pup had cooled the belly and quenched it’s thirst in the muddy water 🙂
The icy wet towels at the finish were a super idea, as it was pretty warm…
This race is one of those unique ones that will stay on the calendar!
It was a fun race. Although it’s uphill, it’s mostly shady. And everyone is exceptionally happy at the top — because they’ve done it.
Good catch on the Sanchez question. Unless there are twins, this guy is the same fast runner who was second at the Sourwood (I reviewed my Sourwood pictures and it’s the same guy or an identical twin). The age is the same also. I changed it to Hector. I can imagine a loose hand-printed curvy “l” and a loose lowercase “r” turning Hector to Helton.
Dennis, congrats on running this one. I think each finisher deserves a medal. It’s nice to see that the first overall male ran an entirely uphill course faster than I can run a flat course. Gulp.
And is there a Helton Sanchez? I have been figuring that there’s one runner named Hector Sanchez, and people have misread his name a couple of times on his entry forms. Sometimes he’s in the results as Hector, and sometimes as Helton.
Or maybe there are two runners: Helton and Hector.
