Agree completely…I just seem to fall down less on the roads! lol.
That is true. I love running and racing in this area! And I guess mud and muck are for some … and asphalt are for others…:)
That’s the great thing about running in WNC: if you don’t like a race, there’s always another one, often on the same day/time. Like I said earlier, I don’t get the big deal about Springmaid, but lots of folks love it. For me, I’ll take the Hot August race 🙂
See everybody at Chimney Rock this Sunday!
This was my second one …. and last. But I wish them the best of luck next year in correcting the issues.
This was my 6th(!) Hot August race, and the weather was (by far) better than any I recall from previous years. The organization has always been a little “laid back” (trying to be polite) and this year was no different. Compounding this was the issue of traffic/congestion already mentioned. This is a small footprint for there to be other activities going on at the same time. Then again, I always finish far enough back that it’s not to big a hassle-and I certainly don’t have to wait around for the awards! lol. Water at the finish was cold, the cookies were great and I’ll be there again next year…
I was a little worried because there were so many turns in this race. I needn’t have worried– they had volunteers posted at every turn. The race was easy to navigate. The weather was just about perfect. There were plenty of post-race refreshments.
The Montford Park Players were putting on a show at the ampitheatre, which is very close to the finish line. Showtime was 7:30, so there were a lot of playgoers arriving just as many of the runners were finishing. This was unfortunate. Traffic was being led across the runners, as they were running towards the finish with about, oh, 100 yards to go.
Why schedule this race for the same night as the play? It would have made more sense to schedule the race for Saturday the 29th, because there’s no play that night.
After Saturday’s disaster, I am not sure this race should remain a part of the Grand Prix. The organization was far from grand. 🙁 Kudos to the Springmaid Splashdown organizers for a great 10K adventure. I guess one out of two races isn’t bad. I will definitely be making the trip back to Spruce Pine next year.
While the heat and humidity can be pretty intense, it’s a fun race through an eclectic community. Hilly (it is AVL after all) but scenic and an evening race is a fun change of pace.
