Asheville Citizen-Times Half Marathon, 2009 Practice Run, Saturday August 1, 2009
|
Now that I’ve done all parts of the new Asheville Citizen-Times Half Marathon Course for 2009, it’s time to give the entire course a run through. I plan on doing this Saturday morning, August 1st, 2009. I’m starting from the Asheville Chamber of Commerce parking lot on Montford Avenue, just off I240. It’s just about a quarter mile from the course start and finish at the Citizen-Times building, across from the Grove Arcade. I’ll be heading out around 7:45 AM at an easy pace. My goal race pace is 8:30-8:40 so I’ll plan on running this at around a 10:00-10:15 mile pace.
Here is a link to the course at usatf.org …

Any interested runners are welcome to join me.

You are too kind…and there’s this bridge for sale… 🙂
I thought I remembered you there!
Believe it or not, you and I finished pretty much right next to each other at the ’08 MM…kismet, huh? lol.
Glad to hear that the practice run went well, and see you Saturday!
I’ve run there once. The Mainstay Medley 10 mile race is held there. I did it in 2008. We had a great time on the ACT course. It was humid but it didn’t really bug me until after about 11.5 miles. Then it was warm, sunny and humid. I posted about it a little while ago along with our pace chart.
See you at Sourwood!
Hope you guys did better than we did-it was humid (and weird fog early in the morning). We should’ve started earlier. But you’re right…Lake Summit is a great place to run…pretty, no traffic, packed dirt surface.
See you next week!
Maybe next time. Lake Summit should be a great run. Have fun and I’ll see you at Sourwood!
Wish I had read this sooner 🙁
Four of us are running tomorrow morning at Lake Summit in Tuxedo. 1 doing 20, and 3 doing 13. Would’ve loved to have joined you all for the practice run! Have a great time!!
Oh, and I ALWAYS take h20 with me…thirsty, swallow a bug, throat dries up from pollen-I got a million reasons! lol.
Well maybe I’ll see you tomorrow. Looks like we’ll get the rain out of the way today and have a nice morning.
Dennis,
I don’t think you’re crazy (or else we’re both crazy). On each long training run I drink a mouthful or two of water, no more. I do this once or twice. It’s just for comfort. What would the other benefit be? I can’t imagine that 2-3 ounces of water makes a big difference to the tissues. On the other hand, I’ve always planned my long runs so that my water was available at around mile 6 and mile 10, 11, or 12. Just cautious, I guess. Or scared.
I may join you tomorrow.
I don’t. Some may think I’m crazy but I have never drank anything on a training run and I have rarely drank anything in a race. I load electrolytes ahead of time (night before and early morning, with Gatorade and/or Endure). I have run 13 half marathons and have done plenty of 10-14 mile training runs. I load a cooler with one bottle of lemon-lime Gatorade in my car before long training runs (where I’m not starting at my house) and I enjoy that afterwards.
What I do carry is a little Spitfire pepper spray device. I love dogs and have two great big ones. When I encounter dogs in a rural setting I praise them and use positive communication to avoid an incident. But, I like to be prepared. I’ve never had to use it.
Dennis,
Each of my long training runs has been a series of short loops (usually between four and six miles) that begin and end at a fixed point (usually my car or my house). That means I can just leave water on my front porch or my car– no need to carry it with me.
On a run like this, do you carry water with you?
