Folkmoot 5k, Waynesville, North Carolina, July 18, 2009

I’ve done this race twice and it’s flat and fast. I’ve had some of my best 5k times here. This year they’ve upgraded to chip timing and online registration with Setup Events.
I mapped the course at USATF and you can access the map for closer review at the following link. I estimated the start/finish point on the map and it’s probably off a little because my mapping of the course comes out a little short. But you can get a sense of the course.

It looks exactly the same to me. I didn’t do it last year but I did in 2006 and 2007. The first mile is pretty much all downhill then there are just a few little uphill bits, but nothing grueling and nothing long.
I set a PR at this race last year. What I ran last year was quite flat. There was some uphill in the last mile, but compared to some other local races (Night of the Ninja 5K, Falafel 5K, etc.), this race is flat.
Dennis, do you think the course has changed since last year?
I remember a lot of gradual downhill and flat in the first mile or mile and a quarter. I also remember a slight uphill at the finish.
It was fun. I finished between two Japanese men. I doubt that will happen at any other WNC race.
