Brevard offers some choice for the 4th of July.  If you’d like to go more than a 5k, they have a 10k as well.  Both races start at 8 AM on July 4, 2009.

Here are notes on the courses …

Both the 5K and 10K have the same START & FINISH Lines, but the 10K will verve off at Gallimore Rd. taking a left onto Country Club Rd. (the 5Ker will take a right) to a turn around point on Country Club Rd., backtracking to S. Broad St., right on Varsity St., then left on S. Gaston St. to the FINISH Line.

Directions:

From the north or south using I-85 from Charlotte or Atlanta take the I-26 West Exit at Spartanburg, SC, to Asheville, NC. On I-26 take Exit 40 (Asheville Regional Airport Exit) west on NC 280 to Brevard. NC 280 will end at Pisgah Forest and will become NC 64 and US 276. Proceed to Brevard (about 4 miles). You will actually be on N. Broad St. once you are in Brevard City Limits. Once you go through Main St. continue on S. Broad St. and in the 3rd block you will see the Transylvania County Library on the left, and check-in will be just past the library in the large grassy area.

If you are using I-40 from the west (Knoxville, TN) or from the east (Raleigh, NC) you will the I-26 Exit at Asheville. As above, take Exit 40 (Asheville Regional Airport) and follow the directions above to Brevard.
