Update on Civitan Sun Run, 10k and 5k, Hendersonville, North Carolina, June 20, 2009

Update: Results now available for the Civitan Sun Run 10k …
I was able to pick up a brochure for this race at Foot RX in Asheville today. I was hoping for a map of the 10k course or some turn by turn directions, but the brochure includes something more general:
- Civitan Sun Run Course Descriptions
It sounds like the 5k is a trail run and the 10k is a hybrid. The temperature Saturday will rise into the 90s and it’s likely to be in the 70s at race time (both races start at 8 AM). Hydrate well. Here are directions from the brochure:

Thanks Paul. I’ve had many people visit this blog looking for the results too. There were 36 on Saturday alone and about another 50 since then. I know that ATC will get the results for Grand Prix purposes but the sooner we can get the results published online, the better. I’m always happy to post race information and results on this blog.
Hi. My name is Paul Fitzpatrick and I am a member of the ATC Grand Prix Comittee. It is nice to see the suggestions on the Civitan Sun Run. This was the first year for the event and it was added to the schedule primarily because we don’t have too many 10K’s and because we don’t have many races in Henderson County. We were also approached by the race and there was a date available on the schedule. I will pass the feedback concerning the lack of pulicity along to the race director. I agree that it was not well publicized.
Agreed. It’s important to engage with the running community because any race director will be able to get volunteers who can anticipate the issues and draw out the race details and publicize them appropriately.
I give the RD and all of the volunteers a pat on the back for their first attempt at this race. I do agree with Ken, though. The ATC is large enough to enforce requirements of their GP Race Directors.
It was very hard to find information on this race. On a positive note, we got to sing the national anthem before the race start, the mile markers were clearly visible, there were three well-manned water stops, plenty of volunteers including the cheerful bike rider, and a smorgasborg of bad food to eat afterwards 🙂
My suggestions would be: publicize the race better including a course map, make sure the volunteers know the route before the race, and nix the trailing ambulance. Replace with something less ominous like an EMT on a scooter…or something.
Dennis, I think you’ve done a better job publicizing this race than the race director did.
Sherry commented to me that ATC should only accept races into the Grand Prix series if the RDs will make information readily available on the ATC website, and I almost agree with her.
Have fun. I bet that this one will be lightly attended (except by Hendo residents).
