Civitan Sun Run, 10k and 5k, Hendersonville, North Carolina, June 20, 2009
|Update: Results now available for the Civitan Sun Run 10k …
This race is a little mysterious because although it’s listed at the Asheville Track Club’s website as part of the Grand Prix, it’s difficult to find any other information about it. It’s listed at Active.com (click here to go directly to the event page), but that only lists the date, time and location. Nothing about the course, awards, packet pick up — all the stuff that we race junkies like to know a little about ahead of time. But — come on — who doesn’t love some mystery? I signed up (the 10k is in the Grand Prix series but there is also a 5k). I included a satellite visual of Jackson Park in Hendersonville from Google Maps and my guess is this is going to be a trail run. I only base that on a little reading about Jackson Park at the Henderson County Visitors Information Center which lists the following activities at Jackson Park:
Bicycle Trails & BMX Track, Reservations or fees, , Nature Trails, Athletic Field, Basketball Courts, Playground, Tennis Courts, Fishing, Hiking, Picnic Areas
So it’s not a stretch to believe this is a trail race. I’ll be there.
Thanks Karen. This is very helpful. Please help me encourage the race director to e-mail the race results so we can get them posted as soon as possible after the race. If we can get the results I will ensure they’re posted at http://www.carolinarunner.com within a couple of hours.
I asked the race director for course details. Here’s what he sent: “The 10k course is contained within Jackson Park for the first 1.9 miles. The 5 and 10k runners will be on the same course to that point. The course splits at the back entrance/exit to Jackson Park with the 10k runners heading out on Glover St. They will quickly take a left on Powell St. At the next intersection, they will take a left on New Hope Rd. About a half mile up New Hope, you’ll take a left on Duncan. The course is out and back. The 3 mile mark for the 10k route is at the left hand curve near the Pentecostal Church. The turnaround and 3rd water station is at the gravel drive at 110 Duncan. You’ll hit the 4 mile mark at 622 Duncan on the reverse route. The 5 mile mark is at the Barker Heights Community Bldg prior to entering the Park again. Your last 1.2 miles is back in the Park on pavement and trails.”
