The Sunset Stampede – Asheville, North Carolina – May 5 2007

This is one of my favorite races.  It’s on a Saturday afternoon.  You start in downtown Asheville.  You run pretty much uphill for 5 miles — past The Grove Park, up Old Toll Road and on Town Mountain Road — up to the very tippy top of Sunset Mountain.  Then you catch your breath and — for the most part — fly down hill back to the finish on the square.

Now this year what makes it even more exciting to me is that it happens the day after the Rock 2 Rock 10k trail race in Swannanoa.  Let’s make this the “Rubber Leg Back to Back” for those that will run both races — one day after the other with less than 24 hours in between starts.
